I am trying to find information on a John William MacDonald. According to the 1920 Massachusetts, USA census, he was born in Scotland about 1812. He immigrated to Nova Scotia in the 1830's where he married Sophia Elizabeth Tanner in 1837. They had 13 children between 1839-1862. He was a schoolteacher in Black Rocks, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. We believe he died about 1887 in Nova Scotia. One of his sons was George Isreal MacDonald born 1850 in Blue Rocks. George was christened in the St. John's Anglican Church. George's death certificate also said the birthplace of his father was Scotland. I remember hearing it growing up but do not remember a city or parish being mentioned. Searches on the internet find up to 500 names. Without knowing a city, I am at a loss as which direction to go.
Nova Scotia records said he was Presbyterian. He was referred to as Ian in the home. He might have fought in the Crimean War, Glasgow, Scotland. Another spelling for the name might be Johan Mcdonel. I realize I do not have a lot of details. Two of his children moved to the USA in early 1900's where my grandparents lived when my mom was born. If anyone can direct me to a church or parish where records might be kept, or if this name sounds familar, please email me at twotowns@mindspring.com. Thanks, Sandra Town
