Hello there,
I am researching my husband's family tree and have come up against a brick wall! Nothing new there really with researching is it?

Anyway my husband is Peter James Burns b 1961, Scarborough, North Yorks, UK. His parents were James William Burns b 1916 Northumberland and Beryl Pansy Davidson b 1925 Maymyo, Burma.

The parents of James were Peter james Burns b 1876 Northumberland and Catherine Elizabeth Turnbull b 1877 Northumberland.

Parents of Peter were Hugh Burns born about 1854 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland and Jane Horsburgh b 1851 Edrom, Berwickshire, Scotland

Parents of Hugh Burns were Agnes Neilson (or Wallace as she had married before)b 1814 Kelso, Scotland and Peter Burns b 1817 - 1818 in Ireland.

This is where the brick wall appears. Peter was from Ireland and we do not know if it was North or South. He married Agnes after 1846 as she had a son, William Wallace b 1846 Eckford, Roxburghshire, Scotland. In the 1861 Census they are living in Kelso, Scotland with both William and Hugh. We think Hugh was their only child as he was born in the mid 1850's and by 1861 there should have been others. Going by the tradition of calling the first son by the father's father's name we think peter's father could have been Hugh. Peter was a labourer at the time of the 1861 census and had died by 1875 when Hugh and Jane married. Hugh's usual residence at that time was Loan End,Northumberland, England and he went over to Hutton, Berwick to marry Jane. They then moved back to Northumberland where they had Peter James the next year. Agnes was living with William and his wife by 1881 but was nowhere to be found by 1901.

Does anyone have any links to this family in thier research??? If so please contact me at peter@japburns.freeserve.co.uk

We would love to find relatives in the Burns side of the family. We have found relatives on the Horsburgh and Davidson sides but nothing at all for the Burns'

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to any replies

Hello everyone,

I am researching the name of O'Raw which I'm told is from Ireland. I have been told that my great-grandmother was Agnes O'Raw from Dublin but I believe it was really her father who was from Ireland and married a Scottish lady. Agnes O'Raw married James Shearer Fisher, father of Thomas Fisher, who was the father of James Shearer Fisher, who is the father of me. The story goes that the O'Raws came to Glasgow to work in the shipyards during the potato famine. I also heard that once the O'Raws got to the Glasgow area they made a lot of money, but they drank it all away and never wrote anything down. (Hard to write when you're not at your best, eh?) So I'm searching for information on this family name.

Does anyone know anything about the name O'Raw? It sounds so uncommon... is it possible that it is a variation of another name that is more commonly heard?

Beryl Fisher

I am looking for information on JOHN WALLACE and MARY RITCHIE who were married in Carnlough, Ireland in 1840. They had 8 children, Margaret, Tara, William, Mary, Elizabeth, John, James and Thomas. They moved to Dundonal/Irvine around 1848.

I need to know who their parents were. Can anyone make a connection with these people or provide any information ?
