Mary LAMPORT - County Wexford, Ireland - c 1812 and earlier.

Searching for family history about Mary LAMPORT who married Phillip MURPHY and lived near Mayglass, County Wexford. I am aware of 2 of their children, namely, Dennis MURPHY (baptised 3 Dec 1812 at St Mary's Church, Parish of Mayglas & Ballymore)and James MURPH (baptised 23 Mar 1823).

It is possible that Mary LAMPORT was from the ancient family of Lambert, or de Lamporte, of County Wexford.

According to Hilary Murphy, 'Families of Co. Wexford', 'the ancient family of Lambert, or de Lamporte, of Co. Wexford, dates from the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 when the founder of the family obtained a grant of the Manor of Lamport, or Langeport, some eight or nine miles from Northhampton. Milo de Lamport, the founder of the family in Ireland, obtained grants of land and built a castle at St. Margarets, in the Barony of Forth.

His son Rudolph received a grant of Lady's Island from Strongbow where he built a stone castle. He made over the land to the Church on his departure to the Second Crusade to the Holy Land in 1184 - to pray for him in case he did not return - but he was killed at the battle of Hattin in the following year (1185). The Augustinians established a foundation on the land given by Rudolph'.

During the persecutions in the 17th century, the Augustinian church was destroyed and the priests killed. The foundation stone for the present church was laid on 11 May 1863.
